Runners to begin Tuesday
By Matt Ward —
Ready to compete for a spot at state after missing out by one place in 2012, the Fredericksburg High School cross country teams will begin fall practices Tuesday, Aug. 6.
Incoming freshmen will meet from 8-9:30 a.m. with the remaining athletes set for a 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. workout.
Athletes will meet at Fredericksburg High School behind the gymnasium for a classroom session on UIL updates and safety training, head coach Dan Aldrich said.
“Once we complete the training, we will begin our season with a mile time trial on day one and a two-mile trial on day two to see who completed their summer mileage,” he said. “It is recommended that everyone show up with a new pair of light running shoes, a sport water bottle, and light clothing since we will train in the heat.”
Currently, Aldrich expects to have around 60 runners on the team in 2013, with 15 returning female and 18 returning male athletes.
The top seven runners and three alternates will make varsity for both the boys and girls teams, with the remaining athletes on the JV squads.
“Everyone will have a role on the team and that role is up to each individual’s daily performance,” Aldrich said. “There are no pre-determined spots and all spots will be set during the first two days of practice. These spots can change weekly up until mid-October where the teams are set for the district meet on Wednesday, Oct. 23 in Bandera.”
