Fundraiser for Honor Flight trips Thursday
The Gillespie County Veterans Service Office will host a fundraising event to raise money for Honor Flight trips.
The fundraiser is set for 6-10 p.m., Aug. 1 at Hondo’s on Main.
“This is an opportunity for our community to hear great music by our local musicians who are donating their time for this event, and there is no cover charge to get in,” said Tami King, Gillespie County Veterans Service Officer.
In addition to music, World War II veterans will speak about their military service.
Honor Flights provide veterans with a free trip to Washington, D.C. to visit monuments dedicated to them. During the trips, veterans are assigned a personal “guardian,” and the flights are equipped with medical staff.
Honor Flight Austin has scheduled the first Gillespie County veteran flight on Sept. 27-28 for 34 county veterans.
“Each $1,000 sponsorship will provide a WWII veteran with airfare, all meals, hotel, bus rental and wheelchair rentals,” King said. “We are encouraging individuals, businesses, churches, civic organizations and others to sponsor in the honor of a WWII veteran or in memory of a WWII veteran.”
