Pari-mutuel season off to fast start at fair grounds

It was another fast start to the live pari-mutuel horse racing season at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds with the running of the July Fourth Weekend Race Meet.

A total of 22 races were run on Saturday and Sunday at the Class III facility to kick off the eight-day 2013 summer season.

The two-day meet at the five-eighths mile oval drew a total of 4,393 racing fans who wagered $307,474.

On Saturday, 2,938 fans wagered $173,158 and on Sunday, 1,455 fans wagered $134,316.

Of the $307,474 wagering handle, $240,158.20 was paid back to the bettors.

That included $135,507.10 on Saturday and $104,651.10 on Sunday.
