Texas wineries take top viognier awards in Franch

Two Gillespie County wineries — Pedernales Cellars and Becker Vineyards —recently won top awards in the 2013 Lyon International Wine Competition in Lyon, France.

It is the first time since the 1970s that American-based wineries have dominated a division in the France-based wine competition. The other time it happened, wineries in Napa, Calif., swept the Bordeaux competition and drew the world’s attention to the wines of the United States.

 During the 2013 Lyon International Wine Competition held in March, Pedernales Cellars was awarded a “Grand Gold” award for its 2012 Viognier Reserve, while Becker Vineyards received the silver award for its 2012 Viognier.
