Police Chief dies after battling blood disease

City of Fredericksburg Chief of Police Paul A. Oestreich died yesterday, leaving behind a 40-year legacy in local law enforcement.
Oestreich, 60, had recently undergone a bone marrow transplant in an effort to survive complications from Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS,) a blood disease formerly known as “pre-leukemia.”
He died around 10:30 a.m. yesterday, May 7, at The Life Care Hospital in San Antonio.
Funeral arrangements are set Monday, May 13, at Fredericksburg United Methodist Church. Graveside services with honors will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. in the church on Sunday and from 7-8:15 a.m. on Monday at Schaetter Funeral Home, who is in charge of arrangements.
