Bluegrass Music On Stage

Pioneer Museum will host four bluegrass bands playing distinct variations of the style at the Roots Music concert Saturday night.

The Southwinds Dulicimer group, a 12-piece orchestra made up of adult non-professional musicians from the Kerrville area, will perform a selection of mountain dulcimer tunes from 5-6 p.m.

Cross Mountain, a Fredericksburg-based quintet specializing in bluegrass gospel with tight harmonies will play from 6-6:45 p.m.

The Double Eagle String Band is set to perform at 7 p.m. There band, which features twin fiddles, banjo, guitar, mandolin, harmonica and bass will have its set broadcast on the radio.

To finish the evening, the nationally-recognized South Austin Jug Band will make their debut performance in Fredericksburg. The group blends acoustic, folk, roots and swing music into an original style they call “newgrass.”

Pioneer Museum is located at 309 W. Main St. Guests are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs.

The concert officially starts at 5 p.m., but the museum is hosting a free jam session Saturday afternoon from 2-5 p.m. Musicians of all skill levels are invited to bring their acoustic instruments and join in.

A catered meal will be served beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The menu, prepared by Vickie Bonewitz of My Own Chef, features grilled pork chops with black pepper plum glaze, fresh tomato and cheese grits casserole, whole okra in brown butter and rolls.

A light option of marinated goat feta, homemade focaccia bread and fresh berries will also be offered.


Beer, wine, water and soft drinks are available for purchase as well as a commemorative half bottle of wine with a 2008 Roots Music label.

Students under age 17 will be admitted free of charge.
