‘Horns Send Five To State Track Meet

Harper High School will be sending five track and field athletes to the Class A State University Interscholastic League Track and Field Meet May 9-10 in Austin.
Cutter Bernhard will be competing on Friday and the girls 4x400 relay team (with Bethany Mounce, Amelia Herring, Ruthann Mounce and Claire Jones) will run on Saturday.
Competition will be at Mike Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus in Austin.
The five won their trips to state with their performance at the Region IV-A Track and Field Meet at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville Friday and Saturday.
Bernhard won the Class A pole vault competition, jumping 15’ to outdistance the other two medalists by a full foot.
Billy Sawyer of Port Aransas was second and Blair Stevenson of Holland was third. Both reached 14’.
Class A state competition will be Friday, May 9, at 9 a.m.
The girls 4x400 relay placed second, turning in a time of 4:10.93, just behind the Falls City foursome who won first place with a 4:10.11.
At state, the girls will compete Saturday, May 10, at 3:05 p.m.
Other Regional Results
The Harper boys also had other athletes who won places at regional.
Jess Ovard was fifth in the 800 meter run, turning in a time of 2:08.96.
The boys 4x400 relay team of Johnny Martinez, Ovard, Sammy Winters and Taylor Brands, was fifth in 3:33.02.
Shane Untermeyer finished seventh in both the shot put and the discus. Untermeyer’s best throw in the discus was 133’9” and in the shot, he reached 44’4”.
Michael Hernandez placed ninth in the discus with a throw of 125’6”.
For the girls, Amanda Herring was sixth in the pole vault, reaching a height of 8’6”.
Brittany Tatsch finished eighth in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:49.59.
In the shot put, Jandi Cornelius was tenth, throwing 32’2¼”.
